Background:
Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) is a voluntary program between the public and private sectors. It recognizes that the highest level of cargo security can be achieved only through cooperation between all supply chain stakeholders. CTPAT enables the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to work hand in hand with all entities involved in importing and exporting with the United States. In order to remain compliant, you are voluntarily permitting strict oversight by the CBP.
This is not a new program. The Security and Accountability for Every Port Act of 2006 provided the CTPAT program framework, which included the CPB's oversight requirements. There are currently over 11,000 certified partners, all of which are committed to safe and secure importing and exporting of cargo. These CTPAT partners account for over 50% of all cargo moved into the United States.
